Tesla Disk Pumps:
Designed for your most difficult applications
The ultimate disk pump solution
When your challenge is pumping abrasives, corrosive fluids, slurries or sludge, the Southwestern Controls/Tesla Disk Pump solution is the answer to your problem. In addition, our disk pump solution allows for delicate shear sensitive fluids and other products to stay intact. Also, consider the Tesla design for the following requirements:
- Low NPSH requirements
- The need to handle large particles
- The need to handle viscous fluids
The disk pump difference
A disk pump from the outside looks much like any conventional centrifugal pump with bearing frame, mechanical seal, etc. However, instead of an impeller, it incorporates a Disk, meaning it has no vanes or blades that cause pulsations or eddy currents in the pump case. This is critical in many applications because special provisions need to be considered along with system design based on where each disk pump is to be engineered and installed. Visit our How it Works page for more information.
Liquids, among others, have adhesion and viscosity properties. As the Disk rotates within a pump case, fluid is dragged by the rotating disk. Once in motion, liquid pushes liquid with as little as 1% total contact with the rotating Disk. The liquid layer adjacent to the Disk remains stationary or fixed in respect to the Disk while the subsequent layers of fluid resist separation from the bordering layer. As the entire mass begins to rotate, it gains energy resulting in fluid moving outward on the Disk in a spiral path to the pump discharge.
Disk pumps are ideally suited for pumping abrasive liquids due to the lack of impingement and/or contact with disks in the Disk. Because of this, they’re also well suited for pumping viscous liquids and are capable of replacing many PD (positive displacement) pump applications with the simplicity of only one moving part. Tesla disk pumps handle pressures and flows equal to conventional slurry pump designs. Also, they are capable of much higher capacities than standard PD pumps without the need for relief valves that are troublesome and can become unreliable in slurry applications. The ultimate in disk pump longevity and ROI
The ruggedness of the Tesla design is legendary – lasting over time for 20 years or more in applications that often destroy other manufacturer’s pumps in less than a year. Statistics show, especially in these difficult applications, an ROI significantly higher when an Tesla solution is installed. Just as important, each pump solution is custom engineered and designed by Southwestern Controls for your specific application and environment. Want to learn more or receive a quote?
